Membership Development & Young Skål

Championing Diversity and Growth – Skål International Hobart

At our recent Annual General Meeting in Broome, I had the opportunity to present statistics highlighting diversity across all Skål clubs — particularly in membership categories, age, and gender.  This data was shared to encourage clubs to reflect on their current makeup and explore opportunities to strengthen their networks by embracing a broader mix of industry leaders from diverse age groups and genders.

During a conversation with Hobart Club and President Nicole, she shared her belief that the club could do more to encourage and welcome more female members. With a current membership of 82, she noted an imbalance in gender representation — a factor that may be limiting the club’s potential for growth and connection.

In response to this reflection, President Nicole and her committee launched a mid-year membership drive.  Members were encouraged to engage their networks and invite guests to a special female-focused luncheon.  I was honoured to attend the event as a guest speaker, where I had the opportunity to share the broader message of Skål International and highlight the excellent work being done by the Hobart club.

The luncheon, held at Drysdale Restaurant as part of Drysdale Tasmania, was a fantastic success. Hospitality and cookery students provided outstanding service, creating a warm and professional atmosphere. The event featured an insightful address by Amy Hills, CEO of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, who shared her outlook for the remainder of 2025 and discussed Tasmania’s position on the national tourism stage.  I’ve had the pleasure of attending this annual event in the past, and once again it was extremely well received — this time with a strong focus on attracting female attendees, a goal that was clearly and successfully achieved.

This initiative by Skål Hobart serves as a great example of how clubs can use self-reflection and strategic planning to drive growth and diversity.  Their proactive approach will no doubt contribute to the club’s long-term success, ensuring a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable future where members can “do business among friends” and form lasting professional connections.

Congratulations to Skål International Hobart on their commitment to progress and inclusivity.

Yours in Skål,
