What an incredible experience the 84th Skål International World Congress in Cusco, Peru was! From the moment we arrived, it was clear this would be a truly memorable event — a perfect blend of friendship, professional exchange, and a spectacular destination.
It was wonderful to reconnect with Skålleagues and friends from all corners of the globe and to make so many new connections along the way. The spirit of camaraderie that defines Skål was alive and thriving throughout the Congress, and every conversation reminded me of the strength of our international network and the value of belonging to this global family of tourism professionals.
Cusco itself was a breathtaking backdrop for the Congress — a city steeped in history, culture, and beauty at every turn. The venues chosen for the official events were simply stunning, from the spectacular opening at the Museo de Sitio Qorikancha to the President’s gala celebrations at the Santo Domingo Convent, they showcased the warmth and hospitality of our Peruvian hosts. Each event captured the magic of the destination and we were so fortunate to be able to meet in these exclusive locations.
I was absolutely delighted to congratulate Ash Munn on his election as Director for Region 12 (Australia) — a well-deserved achievement after what was an excellent campaign (if I do say so myself!) With his experience at a Club, National and International level, Ash will be an outstanding Director for Region 12 — bringing energy, insight, and a genuine passion for connecting Skålleagues across Australia and the world to strengthen our region’s voice on the global stage. I am equally honoured to have been elected Deputy Director and look forward to supporting Ash as we continue to strengthen our region and its connections within the global Skål community.
Congratulations also to Skål International Mérida, Mexico, the very worthy winner of the 2025 Skål International Club of the Year Award. Their dedication and spirit embody everything that Skål stands for, and it was wonderful to celebrate their success in Peru. Mexico is one of only two countries (the other being India) that has increased the number of Clubs and members in recent years and their hard work has paid off. While we at Skål International Sydney would have loved to be able to bring home the trophy, we will have to try again next time.
And on the subject of trophies, my heartiest congratulations to Michael Collins from Skål International Perth on his international Skålleague of the Year award. A very fitting recognition of someone who has gone over and above at every opportunity to promote and support the Skål ethos.
Following the Congress, I had the opportunity to explore more of South America — visiting Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile — and it was truly the trip of a lifetime. All of it was flawlessly arranged by Lisa Malnar from Skål Darwin, proving once again one of the greatest benefits of Skål: doing business among friends.
Yours in Skål,
