Beating period poverty: A call from Lets Go Travel Uniglobe
At Lets Go Travel Uniglobe, we believe travel should uplift both people and the planet.
For over 45 years, we have tailored safaris across East Africa with a strong focus on sustainability.
While we do not own or directly operate accommodation facilities, our flexibility allows us to collaborate widely, impacting multiple communities through our core pillars: livelihood, education for sustainable development, conservation and climate action, and community tourism.
Our work with youth goes further. Through the 'Young Change Makers' program and the 'Adopt a Tree' initiative, we mentor students on environmental stewardship, climate change, and sustainability leadership, and nurturing the next generation of changemakers.
One of our most urgent efforts is ending period poverty through the 'Keep Her in School' initiative, now in its 11th year. Many girls in Kenya miss up to four days of school each month due to a lack of menstrual products; some have never used a sanitary pad. This absence deepens inequality and limits their potential.
To address this, we provide quarterly sanitary pad distributions to eight schools in Laikipia East, supporting girls in grades 6–9 and forms 2–4. Beyond supplies, we offer annual health talks covering hygiene, self-esteem, and personal development.
A national survey reveals:
46% of girls report limited access to menstrual products.
34% have experienced or been at risk of exploitation due to a lack of supplies.
58% believe school-based menstrual health education is the most effective awareness tool.
We can’t tackle this alone. Travelers and corporate partners can support by donating funds or supplies, sponsoring school visits, or raising awareness. Help us keep girls in school, reduce stigma, and unlock their potential. Join us in keeping girls in school and shaping a more equal future.
